JEFFERSON — Charles Urness has only been superintendent of the School District of Jefferson since July of 2021, but has already handled considerable challenges.

He’s guided the district through a successful $34 million facilities referendum and overseen repair of the recent East Elementary School water main break.

Today, Urness fields a perhaps more pleasant challenge — the Daily Union’s “10 Questions.”

Urness calls Arcadia, Wisconsin his hometown. He graduated from high school there in 1987.

He has a bachelor of science degree from the University of Wisconsin LaCrosse, where he majored in history and broadfield social studies, with a minor in political science.

Urness has a 2001 masters of science from UW-Madison in educational administration and a Ph.D. from UW-Madison in educational leadership and policy analysis that he attained in 2012.

He is married to his wife Tina, and the two have two girls together, Emilia, 7 and Ella, 5. He has three older children from a previous marriage, Tyler, 23; Carter, 21 and Victoria, 19.

Urness began his career teaching 8th grade civics in Yuma, Arizona, but moved back to Wisconsin and taught social studies at Brodhead High School, becoming principal in 2001. He moved to Franklin Middle School in Janesville in 2010 and worked there until 2021.

Urness started his job as the superintendent of the School District of Jefferson on July 1, 2021.

Here are Urness’ responses to his “10 Questions.”

1. If you had not gone into education, what might you have done with your life?

“I think I would have pursued a law degree, or done something in law enforcement.”

2. What are some of the things you like about Jefferson and Jefferson County?

“I live within the school district boundaries and like living out in the country. We are still exploring all the things to do and places to eat in Jefferson, Helenville, Rome and Sullivan. I like to go boating. I also like the fact Jefferson is within easy driving distance of Madison and Milwaukee.”

3. Over the course of your career, how have you seen students, on the whole, change — or haven’t they?

“I think students are essentially the same. However, the societal stresses and influences on them have changed significantly over time. For example, I cannot imagine an adolescent version of me with a cell phone and access to social media. We expect kids to act responsibly with technology that not all adults can handle well.”

4. What are your top three favorite TV shows of all time and why?

“’The Wire,’ ‘Game of Thrones,’ and ‘Cheers’ are probably my top three. ‘The Wire’ is just great TV with fantastic acting. Every season tells a compelling story. ‘Game of Thrones’ satisfies my love of sci-fi and fantasy with twists and turns. ‘Cheers’ was must-see TV on Thursday nights for many years.

5. Who are some of your favorite actors and why?

“I will watch almost anything with Keanu Reeves and Jimmy Stewart. Both can/could pull off comedy or drama. I watch ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ every year.”

6. Are you into music and if so’ what kinds?

“I like everything from classical to jazz and rock ‘n’ roll. Van Halen with Sammy Hagar is my favorite. I worked concert security in college and saw dozens of big-name acts in their prime at Alpine Valley — Billy Joel, Jimmy Buffett and Motley Crue, to name a few.”

7. What would be something a member of the general public would be surprised to learn about you?

“My dad was a band director and I grew up loving music and sports. I played trumpet in the jazz band at UW-La Crosse and football at UW-La Crosse.”

8. What three persons in history would you most like to meet and why?

“I would have loved to have met Viktor Frankl, Marcus Aurelius and Benjamin Franklin. ‘Man’s Search for Meaning’ by Frankl is one of my favorite books. All three historical figures have unbelievable stories that involve courage, leadership and survival.”

9. What are some of your favorite travel destinations, both domestically and internationally?

“I visited Beijing, China and the Great Wall in 2013. In 2014, I went to Puerto Rico. I am hoping to travel more, post-COVID. Norway and Scotland are on my bucket list.”

10. If you could live in any American big city, what would be your top three choices and why?

“I am not a big city person, but I would say Minneapolis, Austin, Texas and Washington, D.C. All three cities have their own flair, but Austin’s culture, weather and progressive thinking make it attractive.”

FAIRMONT, W.Va. (WV News) — Approximately 64 students from eight different high schools competed in the Science Showdown Friday at Fairmont State University.

Students competed in a number of challenges pertaining to scientific topics like forensics, chemistry, physics, and biology.

“These students were able to gain experience, not only in science-related subjects, but also in camaraderie, competition and teamwork,” said Fairmont State Professor of chemistry Matthew Scanlon. “They also got to interact with students and faculty here on campus and to see what a future at Fairmont State looks like.”

Doddridge County High School placed first with 148 points, South Harrison High School placed second with 145 points and Jefferson High School placed third with 144 points.

Additionally, two seniors from Doddridge County High School, Cameron Cramer and John Devinney, were each awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Fairmont State University.

“We are very proud to host these brilliant young minds on campus for the Science Showdown,” said Assistant Vice President of Enrollment and Student Life Alicia Kalka. “We are also proud to provide the winning seniors with a scholarship. We strive to make education accessible and affordable for our youth, and are committed to making sure each and every student who comes to Fairmont State succeeds.”

FAIRMONT, W.Va. (WV News) — Last week, the Tygart Valley United Way announced that it had raised more than $628,000 and beat its goal for its 2022-23 campaign. And as the landscape of nonprofits and volunteering in general changes, officials are looking at ways to adapt the next campaign to meet the region’s needs and strengths.

Throughout the 2022-23 campaign, Tygart Valley United Way CEO Brett White told WV News that he and his staff had never had a more difficult time meeting the nonprofit’s goal thanks to the nature of “giving” changing after the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020.

He said that while the United Way surpassed its goal for that campaign, it struggled to do so, and in order to continue helping fund 46 programs at 32 agencies across the United Way’s five-county service area, his team has already been evaluating how to approach the 2023-24 campaign later this year.

“First, we need to review the past campaign,” White said. “We need to review where we did well, where we didn’t do so well and where we need a lot of improvement, and figure out how we can make that happen. When we expanded two years ago, we knew that there would be areas of real work that we needed to do, and that’s still true today.”

White said that while the United Way has a strong presence in Marion and Randolph counties, he noted that Barbour, Taylor and Tucker counties are not “where they want them to be” in terms of giving and volunteerism, adding that getting more involved in these counties is a major goal.

Even in Marion and Randolph counties, White said that the landscape of the nonprofit world has changed wildly from what it was before 2020, and White said that one of the organization’s biggest missions is to return to that point if possible.

“We’re struggling with getting people engaged again and remembering what engagement looked like pre-COVID,” White said. “That is felt across the board in organizations and fundraising and volunteerism. We’re having a hard time figuring out how we can remind folks that it’s still important to give back, whether it be voluntarily or through time. We need people to stay engaged, and we’re struggling with that. …

“Ultimately, the nonprofit sector can’t exist without volunteers and donors and board members and people giving. We need to get back to a place where we can encourage people to step back out and do those things.”

One change the United Way made for the 2022-23 campaign that will stick around is the removal of having a specific person serve as campaign chair. White said that, as times and programming have evolved, having a single person become the face of a campaign has become unwieldy.

“We used to rely really heavily on individuals before because the messaging was really simple,” White said. “A person was stepping up to lead thins, we’re raising money and then giving it out. Now, there’s a lot more happening at the United Way than just the campaign. We’re talking about our programs and 2-1-1 and Vita. We hope the message tells itself.”

White noted that more reflection will need to be made before the 2023-24 campaign, noting that while the Tygart Valley United Way has met its fundraising goal every year since he took over leadership there, it’s becoming more and more of a struggle as engagement dwindles and community needs rise.

“It’s a hard task, and we all have to figure out ways to get through it, but the need continues to grow while engagement is going down,” White said. “We really have to find ways to get our messaging out to more people and help people understand what their dollars are doing in the community. … All United Ways are going to need to look at ourselves and see that there are areas where we can be more efficient and be better for our community. We’re all looking at where we can collaborate more and where we can do things better.”

announced today that the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi) has validated the company's climate commitments, including reducing Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by more than 50 percent and Scope 3 GHG emissions by more than 25 percent before 2030.

The SBTi is a partnership between the Carbon Disclosure Project, the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute, and the World Wide Fund for Nature. It focuses on partnering with companies to help guide emission-reduction initiatives using science-based targets.

These measurable climate goals are considered science-based if they are in line with the level of decarbonization required to keep global temperature increases below 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial temperatures.

As a part of its commitment, Dana has focused on several important areas to secure its GHG reduction, including improving operational efficiency, reducing energy consumption at its facilities, installing on-site renewable energy, and leveraging renewable energy purchase agreements.

"The world is expecting the mobility industry to lead in protecting the planet, and Dana understands the importance of strengthening the sustainability of both our technologies and our operations to support this effort," said James Kamsickas, Dana chairman and chief executive officer. "Viewing sustainability through the lens of science-based targets informs how we manage our natural resources in our quest for a zero-emission future."

"Science drives our strategic approach to sustainability. We know that it's crucial to transparently measure, validate, and report on our climate commitments. This validation from the SBTi reaffirms Dana's leadership position on climate action by refining our processes, advancing our customers' electrification journey, and delivering on our sustainability priorities," added Doug Liedberg, senior vice president and chief sustainability officer for Dana.
